A mini rant on Fog Lights

It was a wet morning today on my drive in, and I have one message for motorists, and no it isn't slow down you maniacs, you'll kill us all.

It is Turn off your God Damn fog lights, note the name, they are not Rain Lights, not Night lights, they are there for fog and like your car insurance, you are not being conned if you don't even use it.

And for those who say the front fogs make the car look cool,

1. Get the hell off my road, a red scanner on the front makes any car look cool but its not allowed, if you want to look cool buy something better than a bloody Rover.

2. It doesn't make you look cool, it makes you look like an idiot who doesn't know what his foglights are for.

In fact, I propose front foglights only be given to people who can prove they can use them responsibly. Or the police pull over anyone driving with foglights on in an inappropriate situation, sure sign they'll be a dangerous driver.

  1. Again, I completely agree with you. The constant use of fog lights is blinding and distracting to other road users, and has now spiralled out of control to the point whereby people are driving around with whole discos underneath their car.

Its just distracting, and I can't help but think that lights on cars should be properly enforced.

And yes, I'm not a fan of it on the new KITT either.

  2. I woudl actually go so far as to state exactly what lights you can have on yoru car, and what situations they should be used in.

I wouldn't ban all teh mobile disco lighting you can get, but like a KITT light on the front, they have to be off when you're on a public highway.

  3. Yeah, I guess that's what I was getting at. On public roads, what lights you've got and when you should be using them should be a bit more monitored.

Granted, there's an element of judgement involved (when to switch on sidelights for example), but if someone's really taking the proverbial, then they should be pulled aside for it.

Off of public roads, then yeah, anything goes I'd say (but on the proviso that if you crash into someone, then its your own fault).

  4. Sidelights, and indeed headlights have always been a judgement call, however fog lights have a specified range when they should be on, i.e at a certain visability.

And yes, having your car done up like a mobile disco is way off. Its distracting and makes you look like a fool

  6. Fog lights must only be used during "seriously reduced visibility" but this is not well-defined. See paragraphs 25 & 27 here: http://www.opsi.gov.uk/si/si1989/Uksi_19891796_en_1.htm

I personally base my decision on how the car in front appears to me. If I'm struggling to make it out in the fog (or spray, or whatever), I turn on my fog lights. Otherwise, I keep them switched off. If there is no car in front, I try to imagine how one would appear if it were there.

  7. But the number yous ee using them in light rain, when I can seel the full length of the M8 (Thats an exaggeration but you know what I mean) But I see so many cars where they're on with the headlights or worse, I was followed by a Merc which had sidelights and foglights on, I mean really, would you not see if headlights helped before turning on the foglights?
