Secret Invasion

Well its all wrapped up, and there will probably be a few more posts on Dark Reign and my hopes for it and various other musings.

Regardless, if you are waiting for the trades or something, this is spoilerific so look away now.

Reactions to issue #8, good issue, but it was more wrapping up than anything else. This looked more like it was setting things up for the future, with Hulkling saddened by the plight of the skrulls, baby Cage taken, and obviously Wasp dead. I also liked the reference to the minor trinity in Avengers of Thor, Cap and Iron Man, and how this is still very much broken. I hope Dark Reign does something to repair the bonds between those three. Finally, the twist at the end? Wow, didn't see that coming, and I've seen Norman bigging himself up in Thunderbolts. It is a bit shaky, because unless a side effect or Peter's ever popular deal with the devil was that people also forget that Osbourne had a nasty habit of dressing up like a Goblin and killing blonds. Of course the other possibility is that people know he has dressed up as a Goblin, but he's better now and has pills, hence why he was so worried that Songbird had footage of him merrily killing his way through Thunderbolts Mountain. Regardless, this is probably not a good time in the Marvel Universe to be called Spider-Man.

So, SI as a whole, wasn't bad. But it could have been better, I think what it all comes down to is the bit in the savage land, how basically it was pointless. Re-Reading and it was filler, or a distraction, like they intended if you believe Bendis. It is probably the thing that drags the series down a fair bit.

So, the future sees Norman Osbourne and a secret Cabal of Villains, well a She0Loki, The Hood, Namor, Dr Doom (yay) and White Queen (Who's presence will be explained) in charge of the Initiative, the Avengers and whatever replaces SHIELD. Iron Man is on the run and you can bet that whatever unofficial support Cap got will be similarly gone.

Bring Dark Reign

  1. According to an interview (with Bendis I think) on Newsarama, the idea is to setup a landscape whereby every hero is going to end up feeling like Spider-Man (of which it looks like Tony's taking the brunt of it, but as you say, Bucky's probably going to run into trouble as well).

I quite like that idea. Especially after Civil War ended with them trashing half of New York, you could imagine that superheroes aren't very popular in the Marvel U at the moment (well, in America anyway, we all love Captain Britain).

  2. Not a bad idea, and of course it works to villanous ends if the Heores are trying to avoid the law as much as anything. Tony will be taking teh brunt of it and I reckon Iron Man will be a title to look out for.

You heard it here, late. The redemption of Tony Stark starts here.

I also reckon he'll have far fewer qualms about whatever Rhodey gets up to in War Machine than he would have if he was still running SHIELD

  3. Agreed. As it was, Tony would've been in big trouble for Rhodey running riot (we saw Rhodey's actions concern him greatly during the Worldwatch years). However, since everyone hates him anyway, he's not going to bother too much.

I wonder if it'll actually be mentioned as a plotpoint. Rhodey violating international airspace and sovereign territory using his Starktech suit could be listed as one of the reasons Tony's on the run.

  4. That would be good, charges against tony include supplying the known international rabble rouser War Machine with equipment, an attractive sidekick and a huge transforming sattelite.

I think (ANd may even drum up a post about it) that Iron man on the run, most likely with Maria Hill's help, will show us the best of Tony, there's a good chance he'll be working without the huge machine of Stark Industries behind him and I reckon we'll see just how clever he is.

  5. Didn't they do something similar a while back after the Kurt Busiek run, where Tony ended up assuming a new identity and shaved off his beard?

  6. Yeah, but I think He'd lost his memory, that was the short lived run with the SKIN suit, and it was over a period where I'd dropped the title.

  7. Ah right. I should really check wikipedia or something.

Regardless, this sounds really interesting. Tony with his back to the wall should really allow his smarts to shine, and him teaming up with Maria Hill is good (and ironic that she's now in a similar situation, forced into hiding like Fury).

There's a good interview with the writer on Newsarama about the upcoming events. Poor old Stark Enterprises (or whatever its currently called) was really done over by the Skrulls. I presume Pepper's part of the story is going to focus on her trying to save the company.

  8. I think he's basically leaving pepper and Maria hill in charge of SE/SI/SS/Stark Biscuits. But from what I've read, any starktech that was switched on when the virus hit is now slightly less useful than a MacBook air, and so consumer confidence is, well Low in stark. I wonder if it will go under again.
