Not another Star Trek Review

Saw the new JJ Abrahms Star Trek Relaunch, and it is gooooood.

I was going to open with a jokey fanboy type jibe of how it was a travasty and a slap in the face to all "Real" fans, but you know what, forget that. It is brilliant. There is fun, there is sadness there is action. Pine carries Kirks swagger with charm, Quinto really manages to bring Spock's inner conflict to screen and Urban's Dr McCoy is the best thing in a film filled with best things.

Criticisms, Abrahms coudl have cut down on the lens flare effect, it got a little annoying, and the Enterprise is still pretty duff, but these are small niggles in an otherwise storming film.

Trek is back. Oh yes.

  1. Pretty much sums up my feelings towards the film. Only other niggle is really Kirk's uber-promotion at the end (cadet to Captain of the Federation flagship - guess everyone else in Starfleet *really* sucks at their job).

They've done an amazing job of re-invigorating the franchise.

  2. More and more folk are ordering me to go and see this movie. Never been a Trekkie but like sci-fi in most of its other forms. May have to check it out after all.

  3. WIll post a better review when I have time.

Alan, largely agree with you, Starfleet promotes a cadet to captain and crews it with mostly cadets. A possible explanation is that they took some heavy losses from Nero, but still, the bulk of the fleet was elsewhere, there must be some commanders waiting for promotion saying "Eh?"

Michael, thanks for reading, nice to have another reader. Been meaning to ask my Brother in law, he was keen to see it from being a fan of JJ Abrahms work, I am having trouble divorcing my Fanboy love of the little references from a critical review. We'll see if I succeed.

  4. According to the writers their original intention was that the amount of time between the Enterprise saving Earth and Kirk getting that medal and promotion was meant to be a bit more vague. The idea being that it would flow in the film, but fanboys could be free to assume several years had actually passed in which Kirk had further proven himself before being made Captain of the flagship.

Michael, I'm also a Trekkie, so I'm pretty biased, but from what I've been hearing the film's been going down well with the non-Trekkie audience as well, so there's a good chance you'd enjoy it.
